If justice is seen solely in terms of retribution then the legal process might well involve brutal punishments. Is there a role for compassion in criminal justice, and is retribution always the only proper response to crime? This is a very troubled issue given the terrible consequences of crime for innocent victims and the need to protect the public. We will examine the problems and look at different understandings of justice and legal procedures.
